Hello. I'm a freelance journalist, author and broadcaster.


I write about the arts, books, music and visual culture for The Guardian, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Financial TimesThe New York Review of BooksThe TLS, Prospect magazine and the New Statesman, among others. 

My most recent book is Worlds Elsewhere: Journeys Around Shakespeare's Globe, praised as "wonderfully imaginative" by The New York Times.

I also broadcast regularly, writing and presenting radio programmes for the BBC, and appearing as a specialist contributor in TV documentaries.

I'm an honorary fellow at Birkbeck, University of London and I've taught at institutions including Warwick and SOAS, as well as collaborating on international education projects with the British Council.
