Events and teaching

I’ve spoken and chaired events at venues including the British Library, the Hay festival and the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow. I've also taught at institutions including the University of Warwick and SOAS, and I'm currently an honorary fellow at Birkbeck, University of London.

If you'd like to invite me to speak at your festival or event, please get in touch.

I’ve taken part in live events everywhere from the Hay literary festival and the Mumbai Litfest to local bookshops and schools, and given public lectures at venues including the British Library, the BFI and the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow.

I'm also an experienced on-stage interviewer, and have chaired one-on-one talks and panel discussions at the British Library, London's Young Vic theatre, the Association of British Orchestras and elsewhere.

I love working with young people, and have run workshops with students aged 13–18. I've also done numerous undergraduate and postgraduate sessions at leading universities and colleges, among them Queen Mary, University of London, SOAS and the British American Drama Academy. I travel frequently with the British Council on educational projects, most recently to India and Russia. Courses I’ve taught include:

  • Working in the media
  • Theatre reviewing and criticism
  • Digital publishing
  • Shakespeare’s life and work

My specialisms include Shakespeare, theatre and Renaissance culture, and I’ve presented research papers at international conferences in London, Paris and Delhi, as well as been invited to address scholarly organisations such as the Deutsche Shakespeare-Gesellschaft and the Indian Shakespeare Society. I've also contributed articles on Beckett, Weimar culture, children's books and other topics to the British Library Discovering Literature project.

In 2014, I was a visiting fellow at the Department for English and Comparative Literary Studies at the University of Warwick, and in 2016 I was part of the academic advisory board for the British Library's Shakespeare in Ten Acts exhibition.

I’m currently an honorary fellow in the English department at Birkbeck, University of London.
